The first, and some say finest, of the nine films Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy made together, chronicles the relationship between Tess Harding, an international affairs correspondent chosen “Woman of the Year” and Sam Craig, a sports writer, who meet, marry, and encounter problems as a result of her unflinching commitment to her work. Hepburn told Tracy when they stood in front of the camera for the first time: “I’m afraid I’m a bit too tall for you.” Tracy replied: “Don’t worry, I’ll cut you down to size.” It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship that lasted until Tracy’s death in 1967.
As the film progresses, you can actually feel how Tracy’s no-nonsense approach dispels the high-flown raptures of the early Hepburn. There’s electricity in the air, plus an Oscar-winning screenplay by Michael Kanin and Ring Lardner, Jr., erupting in a riotous finale when the liberated Kate tries to cook inedible humble pie for Spence.
This film screening is made possible by a generous donation from the Harry & Mary Perrin Fund of the Coral Gables Community Foundation and hosted by Don & Jeannett Slesnick.
